Performance Areas
Occupational performance areas refer to activities of daily living, which are categories of routines & tasks performed by people to fulfill the requirements of their daily roles. Being exposed to certain types of stressors will ultimately result in an imbalance in one or more of these performance areas. What is most important to understand is a consistent imbalance in performance areas may cause chronic and or terminal illness. This causal link between stress and illness was researched in 1967 by Doctor Thomas Holmes and Doctor Richard Rahe. This research resulted in the publication of the Holmes and Rahe Stress Inventory, which is an adjustment rating scale assigning points to stressors and the likelihood of these stressors causing an illness within 2 years of their onset. Today research shows the turnover time for becoming ill after a major stressful event can be present within 8 to 12 months. Participating in our program to manage ones stress before an illness occurs is ideal, but is not always the the case. A number of our clients have recently been injured, are post surgical patients or have already been diagnosed with one or more chronic/terminal illnesses. Managing a client's stress after surgery, an injury or being given a diagnosis is essential. Decreasing harmful hormones that result from stressful events has been scientifically proven to decrease the progression of an illness and drastically increase healing time so you can get back to your life's purpose.
